What Did I Do To My Brakes!?

Why must something always go wrong when I DIY? There is a groove that runs along both front rotors after I installed new brake pads.

I have a track day this Sunday at Streets of Willow. In preparation I installed new brake pads all around to make sure I have enough pad meat for the entire day. It is the same exact compound I had installed before. The install went smoothly, I even made sure to grease the slider pins this time around. I have bedded them as well, so where is this coming from? It is on both front wheels, so it isn't some anomaly that happened from one pad. I figured I would get some advice on here before I go tearing into things again.

Probably just new pads bedding in. Run them for a few 100 miles.

Something get stuck in the pad, or is there a defect in the pad material? Looks like it.

Pull the pads and inspect. Can't tell you much from here, but are you sure the pads are the same in all aspects?

I had a set that did this after replacement - ran hundreds of miles and never cleared up. Probably some kind of compositional defect.

Mine did this, on my Benz - one side only. Nothing stuck in the pad that I ever found, just some kind of weirdness.

Did you do pads and rotors at the same time or just pads? Old pads probably wore unevenly.

If the car stops, I wouldn't worry about it...but then I'm the guy who drives the car until the wheel falls off (seriously, this happened once) so you probably should never take my advice...in fact...my lawyers are, as I write this, slapping me in the face.

Well, the rotor that the pad was eating through had already been turned to below recommended thickness, and I drove it quite some time that way, and I've recently picked up a tire noise, so I'm almost as bad as you.

You didn't do a pad slap, right? Rotors are fresh as well?

Funny thing is Mazda just sent out a bulletin for 2014+ Mazda 3's with this same issue, caused by material in the pads.

I thought you meant this grove and I was like "Yeah....and?"

I had been running the same exact pads previously for around 15,000 miles with no issues. Maybe it was a bad batch of pads made, since both sides are doing? I kind of doubt it, just because the other side of the rotor doesn't have a groove when I feel it. And I doubt something got stuck in both sides. Unless I am just that unlucky.

Just pads. Exactly what kind of unevenness on the old pad would cause this? There was a bit of lopsidedness, from left to right, where one side wore a little more. But I don't see how that would cause a groove with new even pads.

Same exact model number and size when I compared them. I'm going to have to pull them tomorrow and check. Damn it! I hate dealing with brakes.

Is there part of the caliper or pad hardware that sticks out against the rotor?

Rotors were not changed out. They weren't warped, as far as I can tell. I had them bedded properly from the start.

Just to be clear, all you changed was the pads? You were trying to bed new pads on an old rotor surface?

I have driven them for over 100 miles, actually. One thing I noticed is that after I bedded the new pads my brake pedal was mush. I am going to bleed the system so I figured no big deal. The more I drove the firmer the pedal got. Right now it is about as good as it was with the old pads with 100+ miles.

You are correct. From what I have read from StopTech, I should be fine since I am using the exact same compound again.

The only thing would be the wear indicators on the pads and the metal clips the keep the pads in place. I don't see anything rubbing with the wheel on, but this is definitely a good suggestion for when I dig into it. I'm just not sure what would actually be rubbing.

You pull those pads yet?

I just did. The pads are kind of chunking away. I made a new post. Should be on the front page.
